Getting Started & Account
What kind of app is RisTalk?
This messaging app lets you send voice messages simply by holding your smartphone to your ear. You can also use it to keep an eye on family and friends (I'm okay, are you alright?, SOS), as well as a blackboard and a time and attendance record (Ris-Biz).
What languages is it available in?
The languages available are Japanese, English, and German. You can switch between them in the settings.
What devices are compatible?
[Important Note: Minimum OS Version Required for the Store] Available for iPhone/iPad and Android. Some features may not be available depending on the OS version (e.g., voice transcription requires Android 13 or later, image background removal requires iOS 17 or later).
How do I register?
You can register using your email address, Google account, or Apple ID (iPhone/iPad only). For Google and Apple, you can register or log in simply by clicking a button on the login screen.
I haven't received a confirmation email.
If you registered via email, you cannot proceed until you click the link in the confirmation email. Please check your spam folder. If you entered the wrong email address, you can try again by selecting "Log in with a different account."
I forgot my password.
You can receive a password reset email by clicking "Forgot your password?" on the login screen.
Can I use the same account on two devices?
You can use it (up to 8 devices per person). However, messages received before you started using the service on that device cannot be read on that device (because each device has its own unique encryption key).
What happens when I log out?
[Important Notice] Messages and blackboards saved on this device will be deleted. Messages are deleted from the server as soon as they are received and cannot be recovered. Please "export backup" before logging out.
I want to delete my account.
You can delete your account from the "Delete Account" option in Settings. This will delete your profile, contacts, sent photos and files, and all other data on the server. This data cannot be recovered. To cancel a paid plan, please do so separately through the App Store or Google Play. [Important]
Contacts & Tags
How do I add friends?
From the "Contacts" page, under "Exchange Contacts," you can choose from three options: show your QR code, scan the other person's QR code, or send an invitation link using another app. All of these will be sent as a friend request, and once the other person accepts, they will be added to your contacts.
The other party hasn't installed RisTalk yet.
Please send me an invitation link. When someone installs the app and registers via the link, a friend request will be automatically sent to you. On iPhones, this only works if they install via the "Get" button on the invitation page.
Can I find friends using their email addresses?
I can't find it. Your email address is not shared with other users. Please use the QR code or invitation link.
I received a message from someone I don't know.
Messages from people not in your contacts will appear on your home screen as "Pending Approval," and the message content will not be displayed in the notification. Selecting "Approve" will add them to your contacts, while selecting "Skip" will stop you from receiving notifications from that person. Only urgent messages, such as SOS messages, can be read without approval.
What are tags?
This is a tag to categorize contacts into groups such as "family" or "club activities." Filtering by tags will display only those individuals, making it useful for mass messaging and as a recipient for monitoring. Multiple tags can be assigned to a single person.
How do I create and change tags?
On the contacts page, enter a name using "+ Add Tag" and select the person you want to add it to. With tags selected, you can change multiple people at once using "Edit Members," and change names, group them into other tags, or delete them using "Edit Tags." When you change a name, the recipient in the monitoring system will also be automatically updated.
I want to change the other person's name to my own.
Tap on a contact → "Edit Information" to add a name, phonetic spelling, and a memo (up to 200 characters). This information will not be displayed in the recipient's app. The phonetic spelling is used when reading the name aloud hands-free.
What is "RisTalkNews"? Can I delete it?
This is the official account from the secretariat to send updates and other announcements. It cannot be removed from your contacts.
Is there a group chat?
No, there isn't. Chats are one-on-one, and you use "send to everyone" and "ask everyone" to contact a large group (explained below). Replies are returned to each individual chat, so the conversation doesn't get lost in the flow.
Voice Messages
How do I send my voice?
Open the chat with the other person and hold your smartphone to your ear. When you hear a "beep," speak, and when you move it away from your ear, the message will be sent. If there is a voice message already received, it will play first when you hold the phone to your ear.
Recording doesn't start even when I hold it to my ear.
To prevent accidental recording when the phone is placed on a desk or in a bag, it only responds when you lift the phone to ear level. It won't start if the screen is face down or if you simply cover it without moving it. While hands-free is on, ear recording stops, and you use the "Press to Speak" button on the screen instead.
You cannot hold the device to your ear on an iPad.
On devices without a proximity sensor (iPad, some Android devices), a recording button will appear on the screen.
I spoke to them, but the message wasn't sent.
Recordings with little to no sound or that are too short will be canceled without being sent. This is to prevent silent voices from being transmitted from inside a bag or other location. Please try speaking a little louder than usual.
Can voice be converted into text?
Yes, it will. Before sending, the message is converted to text on your smartphone, and the recipient receives both the voice and the text together. The voice is not sent to a server for the purpose of converting it to text. Even if the text conversion is unsuccessful, the voice will still be delivered as is.
My voice isn't being converted to text (iPhone).
Your voice recognition may be turned off. Please turn on "Voice Recognition" in your iPhone's "Settings" → "RisTalk". While it's off, a message will appear each time you speak.
Transcript is not provided (Android)
On devices running Android 13 or earlier, transcription is not possible; only the audio will be sent. This will also be indicated in the speech bubble.
I want to speak in English
You can switch between Japanese (JP) and English (EN) in the chat under "Translate" → "Speaking Language". It remembers the language for each person you're talking to. If the language doesn't match what you're actually speaking, the transcription will be inaccurate.
A faint voice can be heard coming from the earpiece.
[Important Note] The sound will come from the earpiece while you are holding it to your ear, and from the speaker when you take it away.
Chat
How many photos can I send?
By tapping "+" and selecting "Select Photos," you can send up to 2 photos at a time with the free plan, and up to 10 photos with the premium plan. When taking photos with your camera, you can send them one at a time.
Can you send me a file?
You can send it via premium.
I want to send it directly from the photo app.
When you select RisTalk in the "Share" section of your Photos or Files app, you can choose to either "Send to Contacts" or "Add to Blackboard." The limit on the number of images is the same as within the app.
Can I undo a message I sent?
You can undo a message by tapping the speech bubble and then deleting it. It will also disappear from the other person's device. Even if the other person is offline at the time, it will disappear the next time they open the app.
What is "Miss Deco"?
This feature lets you turn a misheard message into a joke by decorating it with stamps instead of deleting it. Tap the speech bubble you sent → then select "Turn into a joke with stamps" to use it.
Can you create your own stamps?
Yes, you can. Select a photo and add a caption. Use "Remove Background" to cut out only the subject (iPhone requires iOS 17 or later). You can also create categories as you like.
What to do when it's not worth replying to?
You can react with emojis in speech bubbles. You can choose the notification sound for reactions and how unread messages are handled in the "Reaction Notifications" settings (both are off by default).
Can you translate messages in foreign languages?
If the latest message you receive (including voice transcripts) is in a different language than the app's language, you can automatically translate it by going to "Translate" → "Translate Message". The translation is done on your smartphone and the message body is not sent to the server. Premium users can use it anytime, while free plan users can use a "24-hour free pass" once a week.
Translation will take some time.
For first-time language users, the message "Preparing translation data..." will be displayed until the translation data (approximately 30 MB per language) is imported. Wi-Fi is recommended for this purpose. You can add more languages in the "Languages to translate" setting.
I want to find the previous message.
The home screen search lets you find contacts and all messages, while the chat screen search lets you find messages with that specific person. You can filter by date, and tapping a result will take you to that location. Only messages remaining on your smartphone are included.
Can I use it for my own personal notes?
Your own entry in the contact list is your "Memo to Me." You can also record a voice message from your Memo using the "Voice" button in the footer.
Can I open the chat even when I'm out of range?
Opening it. You can read the messages saved on your smartphone. New messages will arrive once the signal is restored.
What does "silent" mean?
If you enable the silent mode in the footer when sending an email, the recipient's smartphone will not receive a notification sound. This is useful when sending emails at night or to people who are in meetings.
Broadcast & Poll
How can I send something to a large group of people at once?
Select a tag on the home screen and press "Send to Selected Groups." The message will be sent as a one-on-one message to everyone in the tag, and replies will be returned to their individual chats. Both text and voice messages can be sent for free.
I want to send it only to some of the people in the tag.
The blue "Filter Sending" option allows you to select only the people you want to send to.
Can you see the individual recipients when sending a mass email?
Normally, the recipient can see who else received the message by clicking "View Members" in the speech bubble, and they can also "Add All Members to Tags" (which allows participants to share contact information). If you don't want to show everyone, send it using the eye icon to BCC.
What does "asking everyone" mean?
From the mass messaging screen, you can send a question and answer choices (2 to 9). Recipients can reply by simply pressing a number, and can also press a different number if needed. The sender will see a pie chart summarizing the results, including who is at what number and who hasn't yet responded. The sender can also answer.
I want to let everyone know the results.
Tap the speech bubble → "Send results to respondents" to send the results only to those who have responded. It will not be sent to those who haven't responded yet (to prevent them from being pressured to respond).
I want to send the same message I sent before.
The "Select from History" function allows you to retrieve previously sent messages or questions, edit them, and send them again. You can also search by keyword. The history is only saved on your smartphone.
Are "Ask Everyone" and "Select from History" free?
These are premium features. Even those on the free plan can use them for 30 days from the first day they use either feature.
Can I also be included as a recipient?
Yes, you can. Your own message will be sent to your personal memo.
Calls & Hands-Free
Can I make a call?
Yes, you can. You can initiate a one-on-one voice call from the "Call" option in the footer of the chat with the other person. You can only make calls with people in your contacts.
Are there any limits on the number or duration of calls?
The free plan allows you to make calls of 3 minutes each, up to 10 times a day. The premium plan allows for longer calls and unlimited calls. The length of a call is determined by the caller's plan. Receiving calls does not count towards your call limit.
Incoming calls are not displayed (Android)
If notifications are turned off, the incoming call screen will not appear. Please turn on RisTalk notifications in your device settings. On Android 14 and later, you will also need to allow "Fullscreen notifications" (the app will guide you through this).
It said the other party was on another call.
You cannot make a call if the other person is already on a call with someone else. This call will not be counted towards your total number of attempts.
What does "hands-free" mean?
This feature automatically plays incoming messages in the order they were received, after reading out the sender's name. It also reads out text messages from your contacts. Use it when your hands are full, such as while driving or working.
I can't find the hands-free switch.
When you turn on hands-free mode in the "Optional Features" section (orange button) on the home screen, it will appear on the home screen.
I want to reply with my voice.
When you turn on "Reply instantly by voice" in the hands-free settings, a signal will sound after playback ends, and you can reply within up to 10 seconds if you speak immediately. If you remain silent for 5 seconds, it will not reply. The screen will turn black while it is on, and you can return to the normal view by "sliding to the right to end". You can also reply using "Press and speak" on the chat screen.
Can I use it even if the screen is off?
Android devices will continue playing even when the screen is off or other apps are in use (a notification will appear saying "Hands-free playback in progress"). iPhones running iOS 16 or later will receive and play voice messages even when locked. [Needs verification: iPhone behavior while locked has not been confirmed on an actual device] iPhones will not read text messages aloud when locked. Hands-free playback will also stop when the app is closed.
Is hands-free use free?
Even those on the free plan can use all features for 30 days from the day they first turn it on. From the 31st day onwards, premium features will be available.
Watch Over (Safe / OK? / SOS)
How do I start monitoring?
In the "Monitoring" tab, select one tag for the recipient and turn on "Record Location" and "Share with the person being monitored." Please set location permission to "Always Allow." You will also receive a notification when you first create a contact.
What does "I'm safe" mean?
When you press it, a message saying "It's safe" and the time will be sent to the people on the destination tag. The sender and recipient can decide when to press it (when it arrives, when they wake up, etc.). You can choose in the settings whether or not to include your current location (it's not included by default).
What does it mean to "send 'Are you okay?'"?
Select one person from the tags and ask them how they are doing. Three buttons will appear on their home page: "I'm safe," "I'm in trouble," and "Please help me."
- I need a response now: You'll know the result in 1 hour. Please wait 15 minutes before contacting the same person again.
- Anytime is fine: We will monitor for the time set by the other party (2, 4, or 8 hours). Nighttime hours set by the other party are not counted. You can monitor the same person up to 3 times a day.
If there is no response, the other party will be notified again, and if there is still no response, you will receive a message saying "No response received."
I received a message saying, "Are you okay?" What should I do?
Please choose from the three options on the home screen banner. Even if you have received messages from multiple people, clicking once will send a reply to everyone. The "Please help me" option must include your current location. The "I'm in trouble" option can be deselected by choosing "Do not send location information."
I want to decide how to interpret "Are you okay?"
In the settings for receiving safety checks, you can choose the time frame for a reply, the time of day (nighttime), who will receive the message, whether to include your current location with a "I'm safe" message, or whether to share your location only if there is no reply. Messages will only be sent from people in each other's contact list.
What happens when you press the SOS button?
The moment you press the button, an SOS message is sent to the people on the recipient's tag, followed by your current location. There is no confirmation screen. If no tag is set or no one is present, it will be sent to everyone in your contacts. If you press the button while out of range, it will be sent automatically when you regain signal.
I accidentally pressed SOS.
If you press "Cancel" after sending, a "Cancelled" message will follow. The initial SOS itself was received.
What are "footprints"?
This is a record of your location over the past 24 hours. It records your location when you move and every hour, and entries older than 24 hours are deleted. Normally, only you can see this information, and it will only be sent to others in the case of SOS or the emergency notices below.
Is it possible to receive notifications without pressing any buttons?
When "Share with the person being monitored" is turned on, you will receive it in the following two cases:
- When the battery level drops below 5% (last known location and footprints)
- When no reports are received from the device for an extended period (6-8 hours) ("No reports have been received from [Name]'s device")
While recording is turned off, you will not receive notifications for reports that have not been submitted.
I want to try and see if it will actually arrive.
The "Test Send" function sends the same notification as when the battery is dead to the recipients of the tags. This can be used for disaster preparedness drills. Please inform the recipients in advance before using it.
What does "Today's situation" mean?
This is a list of "I'm safe" and "Are you okay?" replies received today, sorted by person and time. You can see who hasn't received a reply yet, and clicking on a row will send a "Are you okay?" message to that person.
I'm worried about the battery life.
[Important Note] Location is recorded only when you move and every hour, and the accuracy is set to avoid excessive battery consumption.
For more details, please see the "Smart SOS" page.
Blackboard
What is a "blackboard"?
This feature allows you to collect photos, voices, and text from chats and save them all together on a single blackboard. You can write directly on the blackboard, add photos and voices (up to 30 seconds, automatically converted to text), and decorate it with Squirrel Deco (frames and borders).
How do I put chat messages on the blackboard?
Tap the speech bubble to copy it to the blackboard. The copied text is saved on your smartphone, so it will remain even if the original message is deleted. [Note: Menu wording]
I want to change the look of the blackboard.
In the blackboard menu, under "Common settings for this blackboard," you can select the font size and color, margins, display of the poster and date/time, column layout (1-3 columns), and background music.
I want to show the blackboard to people.
You can choose from the menu on the blackboard.
- Preview: Play in your browser to see how it looks.
- Sending a link (LINE, etc.): You can create a link and send it using other apps. Anyone with the link can view it for 24 hours, after which it disappears.
- Sharing and Saving: You can send the blackboard as a file (.rismealbum). Those who receive it via RisTalk can simply tap to import it.
When you are not connected to Wi-Fi, a data usage check will appear before you can preview and create the link.
What is a blackboard for self-introductions?
By selecting "+ Add Blackboard" → "Create Self-Introduction," you can create a self-introduction blackboard simply by adding a photo, name, a short message, and your voice. Each person can create one blackboard, and it does not count towards the number of blackboards included in the free plan. You can also send it to people you've just met using "Send via LINE, etc."
How many blackboards can we make?
The free plan allows up to 20 images, and there is also a limit to the number of items that can be included in each image. The premium plan has no restrictions. [Please check: Maximum number of items per image]
I want to use my favorite song as background music.
In the "Common Settings for this Blackboard" section, you can choose from 5 music box melodies for the background music. Premium users can also add their own songs (up to 5 minutes).
Will the blackboard be backed up?
If the "Back up the blackboard" setting is turned on (default), the blackboard will be backed up. The blackboard only exists on your smartphone and is not saved on the server.
For more details, please see the "Blackboard" page.
Ris-Biz
What is Ris-Biz?
This feature allows you to clock in and out and record work hours, all from the home screen. It can be used for company attendance tracking as well as personal records (such as study time or side jobs). To use it, turn on Ris-Biz in the "Optional Features" section of the home screen.
How do I stamp my time?
To record a Start or End entry, slide the button all the way to the right (simply touching it will not record a record). To record a Break, press the button to select the length of the break; the session will automatically resume after the time has elapsed.
How can I use this for company attendance tracking?
Open the link in the email you received from your company to connect. A consent screen will appear the first time you use it. We will not communicate with your company until you consent.
Will my location information be sent to the company?
We only send the location at the moment of clocking in once, and only if requested by the company. We do not track it indefinitely. You can check whether or not to send this information in the settings screen.
Can I clock in when I'm out of range?
Yes, you can. Your time entries will be stored on your smartphone and sent when the signal is restored, based on the time you entered the time (it will display as "N entries not sent"). You will be notified of any entries that the company did not accept, such as entries made more than 7 days ago.
Where are my records saved?
It's only on your smartphone. It won't disappear even if you log out. Transferring data when changing devices is not yet supported.
I might forget to clock in.
In the settings (gear icon), you can set reminders for the day of the week and time for Start, End, Break, and Restart. There is also a setting to automatically end the recording after the maximum measurement time has elapsed (for company records, this value is determined by the company).
Where can I see the results?
The graph icon allows you to view daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly totals, as well as bar graphs. You can save it as an image, copy the text, save it as a CSV file, or send it to the whiteboard. The weather and temperature at the start are also recorded.
For more details, please visit the "Ris-Biz" page.
Notifications & Sound
I am not receiving notifications.
Please check your device settings to ensure that RisTalk notifications are turned on. Messages sent by the other party in "Silent" mode will not trigger a notification sound.
The message body does not appear in the notification.
[Important Note: Display on Actual Device] Messages are encrypted between devices, so the server cannot read the message body. Therefore, notifications will display something like "New Message." Messages from people not in your contacts will also not display the message body.
The number of unread messages is not displayed on the app icon (Android).
Android devices do not display the number of unread messages. iPhones do display the number of unread messages.
I've marked a message as read, but the unread count doesn't disappear (iPhone).
If you close and reopen the app, the numbers will match.
I want to turn off the operation sounds and transmission sounds.
In the "Reaction Notifications" tab of the settings, you can turn tap sounds, send sounds, and vibrations on or off individually.
I'd like to know if there are any reactions.
In the same "Reaction Notifications" tab, you can choose to "Play notification sound" or "Mark as unread." Both are off by default.
I received a notification that it "did not arrive."
If a message hasn't reached the recipient's device after 72 hours, you'll receive a list of those messages in your notes. This could be because the recipient hasn't opened the app for a long time, or their phone is turned off. Please resend the message if necessary.
Privacy & Safety
Can the operating company read the message?
It cannot be read. Messages, photos, voice messages, and files are encrypted on your smartphone before being sent and can only be decrypted on the recipient's device (device-to-device encryption). The key resides on each device, not on the server.
How long will the message remain on the server?
The message is deleted from the server once it reaches the recipient's device. Even if it doesn't reach the recipient, it's deleted after 72 hours, and in no case will it remain for more than 7 days. The conversation remains on each person's smartphone.
Will the content be sent outside of the broadcast if it's transcribed or translated from a voice recording?
It will not be sent. Transcription and translation will be done on the smartphone.
Who can see my location information?
The recorded activity log (last 24 hours) is normally only visible to you. It is only sent to others when you initiate contact (replies to SOS, I'm OK, Are you alright?) or as an emergency notification if sharing is enabled (battery about to die, no reports for a long time). Records older than 24 hours are deleted.
Is my email address visible to other people?
It's not visible. The only things you share with other users are your nickname, phonetic spelling of your name, and profile picture.
What is "privacy protection"?
Located at the bottom of the monitoring tab, this indicator uses lights to show whether encryption and server record deletion are working correctly. Green means normal, yellow means the developer has been notified, and red means an error. If it's red, please notify the developer using "Notify" (only the error details, such as the app version and OS, will be sent).
I get contacted by annoying people.
If you remove someone from your contacts, their messages will show as "pending approval." If you choose to "pass on" the message while it's pending approval, you will no longer receive notifications from that person.
If I send a link to the blackboard, who will be able to see it?
Anyone with the link can view it for 24 hours. After that, it will disappear.
For more details, please see the "Safety and Security System" page.
Data, Device Change & Backup
Where are our conversations saved?
It's stored on each individual smartphone. Since it's deleted from the server as soon as it arrives, if you lose your smartphone or delete the app, you can't get it back unless you have a backup.
What should I do when I want to change my phone model?
- On your old smartphone, tap "Export Backup" in the profile settings and save the resulting file (to your computer, cloud storage, email, etc.).
- Install RisTalk on your new smartphone and log in with the same account.
- Select the saved file using "Restore from backup".
Messages received after the backup cannot be recovered. Please export your data immediately before changing devices.
Is there an automatic backup function?
Yes, it's available (on by default, once a month. You can choose the interval from 1 to 12 months). However, the backup is only saved on your current smartphone, so it cannot be used when changing devices or deleting apps. In those cases, please use "Export Backup".
Will the blackboard be included in the backup?
It will be included if "Back up the blackboard" is turned on (default).
Some conversations are missing on my new smartphone.
In a one-on-one chat, you can request to have the other person send you the conversation history from their phone by tapping "+" → "Request to restore conversation". You will only receive it if the other person taps "Verified (approved)". Photos, voice messages, and files are limited to the newest ones up to 100 MB.
A "Conversation Recovery Request" has been received. Should I approve it?
Please be sure to confirm with the other party directly, such as by phone or in person, before approving their request. Once approved, all your conversations with that person will be sent to them in one go. This is to prevent your conversations from being shared if your account is compromised.
My smartphone doesn't have enough storage space.
You can check the storage capacity for each type of message in the "Message Data" settings. Under "Clean up old data," you can select a time period to delete old photos, voice recordings, etc. Old backups can also be deleted here.
Messages that were supposed to have been canceled are now displayed after restoration.
It will automatically disappear when you receive the next message from the other person.
Plan Purchase & Cancellation
For pricing and the differences between the free and premium plans, please see the "Plans" page. This page also contains answers to common problems you might encounter after purchase.
Can we get in as a family or team together?
We offer group plans. When the person who purchased the plan adds members, those members will also become premium members. Immediately after purchase, it may take a little while before you can add members. Members can also "leave the group" at any time.
My premium subscription was canceled due to changing devices or reinstalling the app.
From the settings, select "Restore Purchase" under "Plans." You must be logged into the same RisTalk account using the same Apple ID or Google account you used when you made the purchase.
I want to cancel my subscription.
To cancel your subscription, go to the "Subscriptions" section on the App Store for iPhones or Google Play for Android devices. Deleting the app will not cancel your subscription.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
